Ecological risk assessment of surface sediments of Çardak Lagoon along a human disturbance gradient.

Laguna is a hotspot ecosystems that sustainability should be secured using ecological assessment indicators. This study aims to measure the surface of the metal distribution in sediments of Cardak Lagoon Marmara region of Turkey, in order to characterize sources of natural and anthropogenic them and transport mechanisms and to assess their potential ecological risk. Surface sediment samples were collected from 11 stations using a Van Veen grab, while for the background to be determined, core sampling is used from the two stations.

Analysis of several elements, the amount of organic carbon, carbonate, and the chlorophyll degradation by-products are carried out to characterize the sediments. Factors enrichment and toxic index and potential ecological risk were applied to assess the ecological status of surface sediments. Gold mining operations in the near vicinity are found responsible for the enrichment of Au and Hg in the sediments of the lagoon. Cd, Tl, Sb, and Sr are other elements that are responsible for enrichment. The level of potential risk lagoon varies between low and significant levels.

The elements most at risk are found Hg and Cd which in turn points to the mining and agricultural activities as the most dominant human disorder. Index of Cardak Lagoon toxic risks are estimated to range from 5.21 to 11.00, with the average value of a low 7.98. C: N ratios range from 8.52 to 134.93 (average 29.07) shows that most organic C source of terrestrial origin, in particular, of agricultural land in the vicinity.
